October 11th - We had announced that we would begin receiving communion at the railing on this Sunday but after much discussion it has been decided to continue as we have been doing with the pre-filled cups.
October 18th - We will begin singing, with masks on, for the first time! Not only will we be singing but we will have guest organist, Lynn Seppman, here from the Organist Guild in the Twin Cities playing for us.
October 25th- On Reformation Sunday, our 9:00 am service will be down in the Fellowship Hall so that the sanctuary can be used for the Confirmation service at 10:30 am.
Affirmation of Faith: October 25th
On Reformation Sunday, October 25, at 10:30 am the rite of Affirmation of Faith will be celebrated at a special service in the sanctuary for Confirmands, family and friends. Our youth will affirm the promises made at their baptism. Please keep Athena, Kennen, Reina, Owen , Delaney, and Alyssa in your prayers as they prepare for this faith milestone.
Join us for “CWPS”!
I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of you in person since I began here on 10/1, but a pandemic definitely makes face-to-face gatherings very challenging. So, we’re going to try to be creative when it comes to getting to know one another! On Wednesday, 10/21, from 3 – 3:30pm, I invite you to attend “CWPS” time in the newly landscaped courtyard area at church. (CWPS is just a fun little acronym for “Chat with Pastor Sarah”.) Feel free to bring a mask and a chair, and we can enjoy an informal visit in this beautiful space to get to know one another a little better. Stop by when you can, and leave when you must. Hope to see you there! (And if you can’t make it, you can always feel free to give me a call at the church.)
New Member Sunday
Thinking about becoming a member? We are currently planning to welcome new members on Sunday, November 8th. If you (or someone you know) are interested in joining and have not yet been in touch with someone from the church, please send an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or give the office a call at (320) 983-3368. Pastor Sarah will be in contact with those who are planning to join prior to that day to answer any questions and to talk about ministry opportunities at Zion.
Church Email Address
When emailing the church please use our google address: email@example.com. Our old email firstname.lastname@example.org is not longer in service.
These are strange times. That’s a phrase I’ve found coming out of my mouth more often than not these days, and it’s a line I’ve heard from others more times than I can count. These are indeed strange times and difficult days that we are living in. And it’s a very difficult time to plan for a future that remains uncertain. And yet, together we are moving forward and finding creative ways to be the church!
For those of you who have been attending in-person worship, it was great to see you on my first Sunday and to start putting names and faces together. Worship may feel a little different with masks and social distancing, but it is definitely good to be together and to worship in a safe manner. And for those who have been watching our services online, thank you! If there is a bonus to all of this, it’s that we have been able to adapt, reach out, and connect to more people through the virtual world. We are thankful to have you join us in whatever capacity you feel most comfortable.
In these “strange and crazy times,” we know that God continues to be here in our midst, working in and through God’s eople…all of us. In the words of Psalm 46: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
Wherever you are today, wherever you are in life, may you feel the presence and strength of God surrounding you always. Hope to see (or “see”) you in worship!
YOUTH & FAMILY MINISTRIES
Sunday School began October 4th. Children, 3 years old to 6th grade, are dismissed from worship after the Children’s sermon to go downstairs for Sunday School. They have a short lesson and craft and then return to worship. Also available are age appropriate children’s bulletins with activities centered on the Sunday’s lessons.

LIFE @ ZION
“God’s Work. Our Hands” Outreach - On Sunday, September 13th, we celebrated God’s Work. Our Hands Sunday. For the next two months, we will be collecting items for the schools and Milaca Food Pantry. You may donate money to this outreach project or bring the following items to the church at your convenience through November 15th. Due to job loss or reduced pay, many families in our region need our help more than ever. Most needed items include: any hygiene and personal care items, including deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, bath wash, diapers (3, 4, 5), female products, toilet paper. The food pantry is also in need of peanut butter and cereal. For Milaca students with food insecurity, you can donate money or the following snacks: cereal bars, cereal snack boxes, snack crackers, any kind of Goldfish crackers, fruit snacks, Jell-O and pudding snacks, pretzels, fruit cups. Keep in mind that you can also donate to our Good Samaritan fund, which provides grocery and gas cards to families. Thank you for assisting us with this outreach to our community!
Hearing Loop System Installed - Zion has just installed a hearing loop system which helps people hear sounds from a microphone or an audio system directly and clearly in their hearing aids. A hearing loop provides a wireless, inductive signal that is picked up by the hearing aid when it is turned to “Telecoil” setting. Hearing loop systems are supported by all 38 models of in-the-ear hearing aids and 29 of 30 conventional behind-the-ear models. We also have a portable hearing devise that is available at the usher desk that will pick up the transmissions.
Servant Keeper Online Church Directory - The church directory is the window to a church’s family life. However, more and more people are using their phones, mobile devices and computers to look for information. Creating an online directory makes members’ contact information digitally available. Through our office software, Servant Keeper, Zion will be creating an online church directory. Members will be able to edit family and individual records, update things like their pictures, phone numbers, contact information, emails and more! Look for an invitation email being sent soon where you will be able to log in and create your individual password to update your info. We encourage you to put a current picture of your family. Pictures can be submitted to the office to be downloaded. A hard copy of the directories will be printed off for those with no internet connection. This will be a great help to our new pastor! The church office will soon be sending out a link for you to access your information in the directory.
Online Reflections - Keep up with all the great opportunities and ministries going on within our Northeastern Minnesota Synod. Go to www.nemnsynod.org and click the Online Reflections tab to sign up to receive weekly updates to stay on top of what’s going on in our synod and church!
